After spending a few weeks in Europe promoting her new album, Avril Lavigne is back stateside.
Joined by her omnipresent boyfriend Brody Jenner, the What the Hell singer was seen out and about in New York City today (March 8).
Despite the paparazzi presence, Avril made the best of the situation by handing out copies of her new album Goodbye Lullaby to the shutterbugs.
The new album, which officially drops today, is a departure from Avril’s mainstream pop roots and that’s just the way she likes it.
“I’m older now. I’ve done the whole pop-rock, aggressive, bratty, playful, boy-bashing stuff,” the 26-year-old chanteuse tells Billboard. “I’m not really there right now, so I definitely didn’t want to keep making the same record over and over.”
Avril’s ex-husband Deryck Whibley also produced six songs on Goodbye Lullaby.
“We had a studio in the house that we were living in together, so it was just really simple,” Deryck says of working on the album. “A lot of the songs I did were just supposed to be demos, but she’s the kind of person where, if she does something once, it’s usually her best take and she never wants to do it ever again. It would be just a quick demo but it would turn out really well.”
And though they’re exes, Avril says recording the album with her former flame was not awkward whatsoever.
“I think I’m pretty lucky, and I feel really grateful to be able to say that we’re like best friends, that we’re like family,” Avril says of Deryck. “I hope to work with him in the future. We have a great friendship, great relationship and a lot of respect for each other.”
A tour is in the works, and Avril says of her upcoming live show, “I think I’ll do more stripped-down, acoustic stuff, like me on the piano, but I definitely don’t wanna make my whole show like that. I’ll have those moments and then rock out with the old stuff.”
